New courses offer weight training to women and youth

“For some people, learning the barbell lifts can be intimidating, so I just want to help make strength as accessible as possible for everyone,” says Wellness Manager Cody Bass.

The J is pleased to announce the creation of two new weight-training classes: a four-week “Intro to Barbell” for women and youth ages 14–18, and an eight-week program called “GRIT” for youth ages 10–13.

“A member asked me if I could put together an intro to barbell class for women and it sounded like a fun idea,” says Cody Bass, wellness manager at The J. “For some people, learning the barbell lifts can be intimidating, so I just want to help make strength as accessible as possible for everyone.”

Meanwhile, GRIT will get its young participants to focus on a different muscle each week, with the goal being to help kids learn each major muscle group and feel the muscles working as they move through a full range of motion.

“The day after each class those kids will know what they worked,” says Cody.

The intro to barbell classes will only be available to four students at a time while GRIT will have room for six kids total. Ideally, participants will end the courses with a good-enough grasp of the lifts to begin training themselves to a significant degree.

“If you’ve ever been curious about how to deadlift or wish you were more confident in the gym, then come on out,” says Cody. “Even if you don’t take a class, I’m always available to help and answer your questions.”
