CEO Brooke Bowles

Join us on Sunday, October 19, 2-4 p.m. as we gather to celebrate one of our community’s most unique and valuable assets: our Legacy Members folks who have been involved with The J for forty or more years. The event will center around the dedication of The J’s newest space: the Legacy Members Courtyard.

“Not only have we gotten new lounge furniture in the library and created a beautifully landscaped outdoor patio,” says CEO Brooke Bowles, “but we’ve also installed a door between the two for easy access. I’m pretty sure this will soon become a popular spot for relaxing, reading, browsing the news, and catching up with friends.”

L’dor v’dor

The “Legacy Member” designation was launched back in May when some 50 members who have been at The J for 40 or more years were brought together for a celebratory luncheon that included plenty of reminiscing. The luncheon will become an annual event.

Some 50 “Legacy” members attended a luncheon in their honor back in May. The group was given plenty of time to reminisce.

“How many organizations do you know that have a whole cadre of members who’ve been part of the organization for at least four decades?” Brooke asks. “With all their memories and experience, these folks truly embody the Jewish value of l’dor v’dor, or the idea of passing down history, knowledge, and values from generation to generation.”

All in the family

One Legacy Member, Amy Saag, is proud to be carrying on a long family tradition. The J played a significant role in her life growing up before touching the lives of her children. They attended the Cohn Early Childhood Learning Center before taking advantage of day camps and teen programming. Her father, Leonard J. Weil of blessed memory, even served as president of the board.

When asked what’s struck her most over the past four decades, Amy points to The J continuing its long tradition of being a welcoming and dynamic community center for all. “And its holistic approach of educating  the mind, exercising the body, and energizing the soul — all with a Jewish focus — continues to be one of its greatest hallmarks,” she says.

Watch Amy’s February appearance on our popular Southern Jewish Voices program, where she talks about growing up in B’ham, working at the Cohn Early Childhood Learning Center, raising a family, and much more.

“Just look at the classrooms bustling with preschoolers’ energy, the Senior Lounge hosting monthly Shabbat services, the auditorium hosting plays and speakers, the programs and annual events, exercise facilities boasting everything from yoga to Pilates to meditation to personal training. And don’t forget our outdoor tennis and pickleball facilities along with our indoor and outdoor pools!

“Our LJCC provides opportunities  to be active and social at every age and stage. It’s an honor to have been a member here for more than 44 years.”
