Last month I had the incredible opportunity to attend classes led by each of our group fitness instructors. After having spent more than 20 years in the fitness industry, I can confidently say we have some of the best instructors in the city — and truly some of the best I have ever encountered in my career.
What stood out most throughout this experience was not only the talent of our instructors, but their genuine passion and commitment to the well-being and success of every member who walks into our studios. They create environments that are welcoming, motivating, and deeply community-centered.

Whether supporting someone taking their very first class or encouraging longtime participants to continue growing stronger, our instructors show up each day with heart, professionalism, and care.
Remarkable instructors…
Group fitness has long been an anchor of the wider JCC community, inspiring generations of members through movement, connection, and joy. And our program carries a rich legacy built by remarkable instructors over the years. Legends like the late Marilynn Leeds helped shape the spirit of group fitness here at The J, paving the way for talented instructors like Ruthie Jacobs and so many others who continue that tradition today. Nan Unkenholz is truly a legacy unto herself, teaching everything from retro aerobics to today’s evolving fitness formats — all with her beloved trademark energy and dedication.
We are also fortunate to have instructors who simply “can’t quit us” — individuals who stood by our community through incredibly challenging moments (including the anxious uncertainty of a pandemic) and who continue to inspire members today through their resilience, consistency, and passion for wellness.
…and devoted members
But of course it’s the members who bring it all together.
One of the more memorable highlights of my tour de J experience was watching a participant dazzle her longtime fellow group fitness class regulars by performing a memorized portion of their Zumba class. The move to step up and take the lead inspired laughter, joy, and celebration. The camaraderie was palpable.
Perhaps the most eye-opening part of my month-long endeavor was experiencing firsthand the incredible variety of classes we offer. From low-impact and accessible options like Chair Yoga, Tai Chi, and Zumba to higher-intensity offerings like J-Strong and BodyPump, there really is something for everyone — regardless of age, experience level, or fitness goals.
B! I! N! G! O!
To celebrate our amazing instructors and encourage members to explore something new, we are excited to launch our Group Fitness Bingo Challenge that will run from June 1 to July 31. This engaging activity should spur members to explore our myriad classes, meet new instructors, step outside comfort zones, and experience the vibrant energy that makes our group fitness community so special.
If you’ve been thinking about trying a class, this summer is the perfect time. You may discover a new passion, a new routine, or even a new community. Most importantly, you will experience firsthand the extraordinary instructors who make our group fitness program such a meaningful part of your experience here at the Levite JCC.
See you in class!
