Levite JCC CEO Brooke Bowles has been selected for recognition by The White Rose Society, an honor presented to non-Jewish leaders who have stood against antisemitism while supporting their local Jewish communities — especially in the wake of the terrorist attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.
“This recognition reflects not only Brooke’s personal leadership, but also the Levite JCC’s commitment to building understanding, fostering community, and standing firmly against antisemitism,” says Steven Corenblum, president of the Levite JCC Board of Directors.
When Brooke was named head of the Levite JCC in early 2023, she brought with her a passion for strengthening communities. And although she is not Jewish, the months following October 7 revealed another defining quality: an unwavering willingness to stand publicly and unequivocally with Birmingham’s Jewish community.
“Brooke has become a visible advocate against antisemitism,” reads her nomination. “She has spoken to churches, civic organizations, and community groups about the challenges facing Jewish people today while emphasizing the importance of education, dialogue, and security.” During Brooke’s tenure, The J has expanded Jewish and Israel-focused programming, hosted rallies, presented educational events on antisemitism, and screened documentary films.
In spring 2025, Bowles traveled to Israel for the first time. The journey helped her better understand life in Israel and deepened her knowledge of the region while strengthening the Levite JCC’s ability to educate and support its members and the broader community.
Founded shortly after October 7, 2023, The White Rose Society takes its name from the courageous German student resistance movement that opposed the Nazi regime early in World War II. Today the organization honors and thanks the individuals who have become beacons of hope for the Jewish people by recognizing those who make a difference through their actions.
A date for the award presentation is pending.
