B’ham’s educational gem

By Robin Berger

At the N.E. Miles Jewish Day School, we’re excited to share a campus with the Levite JCC (we sit east of The J). As the only Jewish day school in Alabama, NEMJDS is a place where children are known, challenged, and inspired every day — and where learning feels both joyful and deeply personal.

Shaped by Jewish values

One of the most distinctive features of the Day School is its commitment to differentiated instruction. Intentionally small class sizes allow teachers to better understand each student’s learning style and adjust instruction in real time. Children who are ready to move ahead do so right away while those who need more support receive it without being separated from their classmates.

“My child doesn’t just attend school — she thrives at the Day School. She’s confident, curious, and genuinely loves learning.”

“Our teachers meet each child exactly where they are,” explains Head of School Brian Cain. “When students feel both challenged and supported, learning becomes exciting — and that excitement carries them forward.”

Jewish values shape our entire learning experience. Kindness, respect, justice, and truth are not limited to Judaics lessons — they are intentionally woven into every subject area and every part of the day. Students come to understand that academic growth and character development go hand-in-hand as we instill in them a strong sense of what it means to be a good person in the world.

Strengthening Jewish B’ham

The Day School’s impact is clear from its extraordinary growth. Over the past four years, enrollment has more than doubled, resulting in new energy, opportunities, and partnerships for the institution and wider community.

Sharing a campus helps facilitate multi-generational interactions, like these three N.E. Miles Jewish Day School students — (l-r) Miriam Weinbaum, Lauren Holified, and Mila Newcomb — who were part of a group of students that met recently with members of the Roz Feigelson Circle of Life Knitting Group at The J for an intergenerational discussion of books by Jewish authors that the students have been reading during Jewish Book Month.

A thriving Day School enriches the Jewish and wider communities. Students grow up connected to each other, to meaningful Jewish life, and to the community institutions that anchor Birmingham Jewish life. They become the next generation of engaged leaders, volunteers, and community builders.

For families seeking an exceptional educational experience rooted in both differentiated learning and deep Jewish values, NEMJDS offers something special. And for community members and donors, supporting the Day School is a powerful investment in the future of Jewish Birmingham — ensuring vibrant and joyful Jewish learning for many years to come.
