Mother’s challah-Day

There’s something especially sweet about the smell of fresh challah filling the halls of the Levite JCC’s Cohn Early Childhood Learning Center — especially when tiny hands are doing the baking.

In celebration of Mother’s Day and Shabbat, preschool children at the Cohn ECLC recently took part in a special challah bake where they learned how to braid the traditional bread. With plenty of concentration, the children created challah to bring home and share with their mothers.

“The activity was more than just a fun kitchen project,” says Inna Shepard, director of the school. “It gave the children a meaningful opportunity to connect with Jewish traditions while celebrating the important role mothers and caregivers play in their lives.” Teachers used the experience to talk about Shabbat, family, and gratitude.

For many of the children, the best part may have been proudly carrying home their handmade challah creations, excited to surprise their families ahead of Mother’s Day weekend.

At the Cohn ECLC, moments like these help turn everyday learning into lasting memories — one braid at a time.
