Much more than just a membership

Here’s a fun experiment: Walk through the Levite JCC on any given day and count how many conversations begin with, “Hey! How’ve you been?”

Spoiler alert: You might lose count pretty quickly.

That’s because The J has never been just a place to exercise, cool off in the pool, or drop the kids off for camp. And while we offer all of those things, what keeps people coming back year after year is something a little harder to convey through a slick brochure.

It’s the people.

Members know one another. Staff know members by name. Kids find their friends before their parents have even finished checking in. Before long, a workout turns into a conversation, a swim becomes an evening with neighbors, and a quick stop at The J lasts an extra 20 minutes because you just had to catch up with someone.

A community-first mindset even influences the way we plan events. This summer’s Thursday Family Fun Nights aren’t designed to be big money-makers. Instead, we’re keeping food and drinks as close to cost as possible because we’d rather see families spending an affordable evening together than worrying about what dinner by the pool might cost. Just add pizza, a 300,000-gallon pool, inflatables, music, and plenty of familiar faces, and you’ve got one of Birmingham’s best summer traditions.

Building relationships

CEO Brooke Bowles recently got a reminder that the Levite JCC community doesn’t stop when you leave the building. “Recently I ran into one of our member families at the airport, and we stood there catching up like old friends,” she says. “That’s what this community is all about. You build real relationships here, and they don’t end when you walk out our door.

“That’s not the kind of experience you’ll find just anywhere.”

It’s a reminder that community grows best through genuine relationships, shared experiences, and people caring about one another. That’s what makes The J feel different.

It’s not simply where our members spend some of the favorite parts of their days or weeks or months. It’s where they belong.
