A Crime on the Bayou is an award-winning documentary that profiles a black teenager named Gary Duncan, who bravely challenges the most powerful white supremacist in 1960s Louisiana with the help of Richard Sobol, a young Jewish attorney. Systemic racism meets its match in decisive courtroom battles, including the U.S. Supreme Court, and a lifelong friendship is born between Duncan and Sobol.
We will screen the film in the auditorium and host a discussion panel afterward featuring Duncan and writer Lolis Elie, the son of a lawyer from Sobol’s team. Refreshments will be provided.
This film is brought to Birmingham through generous funding from the Birmingham Jewish Foundation.
