Michele has earned numerous academic awards while at UAB. And as director of development at Spike Lee’s 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks, Michele was responsible for the acquisition and development of new projects, including New Jersey Drive, Girl 6, Sula, The Jackie Robinson Story, and Summer of Sam. In addition, she served as associate producer on Lee’s Academy Award-nominated film 4 Little Girls, a feature-length documentary for HBO about the 1963 bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church.
A life in Birmingham
Program attendees will hear firsthand how Michele — the daughter of a Holocaust survivor — moved to Birmingham in second grade, where she was only one of a few Jewish students at Mountain Brook Elementary. She will discuss growing up in Birmingham and how that experience compares with having raised her own interfaith family here, how leaving Birmingham shaped her relationship with Judaism, why she loves documentary films, and much more.
