Kiera Horton is our new assistant director of athletics here at The J. She was born and raised right here in the Magic City and graduated from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where she officially majored in kinesiology and unofficially in good restaurants. Kiera says she’s always loved giving back to her community and inspiring young people — especially through sport. We caught up with her to ask a few questions…
LJCC: How did you get involved with youth athletics?
KH: I got my start with youth athletics as the sports and fitness coordinator at the A.G. Gaston Boys & Girls Club, where I worked with kids age 13 and under. I taught the basics, building confidence, and about how patience is a sport all its own. Over time, my eight-plus years in the sports industry led me to helping high school basketball players (14 and up) earn scholarships and train for college play.
In fact, I’ve helped high basketball players earn scholarships and stay NCAA eligible — and I run my own nonprofit to keep doing just that. So now, whether it’s tying shoes or reviewing highlight reels, I’ve coached every age — and have loved every moment of it.
What’s your favorite sport to play?
Basketball. I love the rhythm, the energy, the trash talk (respectful, of course), and the way the game teaches you to think fast, move smart, and show up as a team.

What’s your favorite sport to teach?
Basketball again — because it’s the perfect combo of skill, fun, and life lessons. I love seeing the confidence kids build when they finally hit that shot they’ve been practicing or pull off a move they thought was too hard. It’s magic.
What attracted you to The J?
The LJCC feels like a place where community actually means something. It’s a family environment that uplifts everyone — whether you’re a first-time player, a seasoned coach, or just here for the snacks and spirit. And the vibes are top-tier.
Do you have any hobbies?
Absolutely! I’m a beginner hybrid athlete. I love to lift heavy in the weightroom and am building my running endurance so I can run a half marathon and eventually a marathon. I’m proud to say that my resting heart rate has lowered by 10 beats per minute (runners understand why this is a big deal). I’m also building my sports media career — think football and basketball sideline interviews and storytelling. But I still find time to hunt down the city’s best tacos like it’s a full-time job.
What’s your guiding philosophy about teaching sports to children?
Lead with love, coach with purpose, and cheer even louder when they fall and get back up. Sports are less about wins and more about the growth, resilience, and laughter that happens in-between. Unless you’re playing in high school or college, then let’s get that win, buddy!
What’s your ideal vacation?
Somewhere with crystal-clear water, strong margaritas, a beachfront breakfast, and no wifi service.
Cats or dogs?
Both… but I have to say cats because I’m a cat mom. But I definitely love dogs because they are loyal, fun, and always down to go outside. Kind of like me!
On a Saturday morning we’ll probably find you…
Lifting heavy weights, editing sports highlight reels, or pretending not to be competitive during a casual game of basketball with my godchildren and the neighborhood kids.
