New grants focus on antisemitism, promote Israeli culture

From the Birmingham Jewish Federation

The Birmingham Jewish Federation recently awarded The J two grants for activities that will take place later this year. The first, a presentation about the current state of antisemitism, will feature speakers, resource-sharing, and refreshments. The event (details to be determined) will teach the history of antisemitism and how it appears in modern culture. In addition to increasing understanding, the event will present practical ways to fight against antisemitism.

The second activity funded by the Birmingham Jewish Federation will focus on the integral role that wine plays in many Jewish traditions and celebrations, while also celebrating 75 years of Israel’s independence. Attendees will sample six wines produced in Israel, and a wine educator will lead the event with a discussion of each wine’s origin, information regarding its vintners and history, geographic details that influence its ingredients and production process, and the ways that Jewish agricultural laws and other Jewish traditions impact the final product. Because Israeli wines are underrepresented in the Birmingham market, we look forward to the opportunity to introduce attendees to something they’ve likely not experienced before.

From the Birmingham Jewish Foundation

Thanks to support from the Birmingham Jewish Foundation, The J will expand its Yom Ha’Atzmaut celebration during this year’s Jewish Food and Culture Fest. Inspired by the Machane Yehuda shuk in Jerusalem, we will transform part of Levite Field into a lively miniature bazaar where visitors will select free samples of various spices, candies, dried fruits, and nuts. By recreating this iconic market scene — including its colors, crowds, tastes, and aromas — The J will provide a special treat for anyone who loves the culture and spirit of Israel, while introducing one of its most notable experiences to others who have never visited.
