Why I give to The J: Letty Marcus appreciates her ‘home away from home’

Letty Marcus, 90, has spent a lot of time at The J, her “home away from home,” since she joined in 1960. While witnessing a few changes over the years, she’s always taken the time to let us know when our beloved facility isn’t getting the attention and care it deserves.

We caught up with Letty to find out why she’s so generous to The J…

Letty Marcus says she visits The J “about seven days a week”.
LJCC: Can you share a specific experience or moment that reinforced your commitment to supporting the Levite JCC?

LM: I don’t need anything else. You know, this has been my home away from home since I started swimming back in the 1970s. I came to the center and swam 40 to 50 laps, went home, and worked on the books [for the family business, Marcus Food Distributors]. The J has always been part of me.

Do you recall any initial inspiration that spurred your first donation to the Levite Jewish Community Center?

We were at a point in our lives where we could afford to give more. Our children were grown and educated and married and gone. And my husband was doing well in his new business: Marcus Food Distributors, where he distributed gourmet meats and cheeses and kosher foods. He went into this business in 1973, and it just took off.

Are there particular aspects or initiatives of The J that resonate with you and motivate your continued support?

The pool and the Sokol Fitness Center. And I do yoga. Oh, and bridge — my group plays cards here once a week. It’s such a pleasure to come here.

And I’m glad you’ve started having managers on duty here on weekends.

Probably the biggest problem is the temperature of the room where you’re playing.

What would we have to complain about if not the room temperature? But The J is so nice about putting up with us.

How do you envision the future of The J?

I just hope it continues to grow.
