I am The J: Laycee Dorsett reels in new members while jamming way too loudly

We recently hired Laycee Dorsett under the newly created job title of membership recruitment director. Reporting to Chief Experience Officer Shannon Brasovan, Laycee is charged with driving new member recruitment. A B’ham native and University of Alabama graduate, Laycee is diving into her new role…

LJCC: What are your Birmingham roots?

I was born and raised in Mountain Brook, so my Birmingham roots go all the way back to elementary school carpool lines, pool days at The J, and knowing exactly where to find the best BBQ in town. I’ve spent my life surrounded by this community, and it’s given me a true appreciation for connection, tradition, and the magic of running into someone you know pretty much everywhere you go.

LD: And you have a family member who used to work here at The J, correct?

Yes, my grandmother actually worked here for more than 20 years, and I started coming to The J when I was around 7 years old. So in a lot of ways, this place feels like home to me. It’s been a part of my life for as long as I can remember, and now getting to work here myself feels really special — like I’m continuing a family connection to a place that’s always meant a lot to me.

What are your favorite tour highlights when you’re showing prospective members around?

When I’m giving a tour, I always love showing off the spaces that really showcase the heart of The J — like the Cohn Early Childhood Learning Center, where there’s so much joy and learning happening, and the outdoor pool, which is a favorite for families and members of all ages. And I absolutely love it when members wave or stop to say hello as I’m walking a tour through the building. That’s when prospective members can really see that this is more than just a facility — it’s a community where people feel seen, connected, and at home.

“I absolutely love it when members wave or stop to say hello as I’m walking a tour through the building,” says Membership Recruitment Director Laycee Dorsett. “That’s when prospective members can really see that this is more than just a facility — it’s a community where people feel seen, connected, and at home.”

What have you learned about The J since you started working here?

I’ve learned that it’s so much more than a fitness center or community space — it’s truly a hub of connection, inclusion, and tradition. There’s a real sense of belonging here, and I’ve come to appreciate how deeply The J supports people of all backgrounds across generations.

What’s your ‘elevator pitch’ for prospective members?

That The J is more than just a gym — it’s a community. Yes, we have a great fitness facility, a beautiful pool, and amazing programs for all ages — but what makes us truly special is the feeling of belonging.

Whether you’re here for preschool, a yoga class, or just a cup of coffee in the lobby, there’s a warmth and sense of connection that you don’t find just anywhere. It’s a place where people know your name, care about your story, and celebrate life together. That’s what I love sharing with new members.

What did you learn during your six years with School of Rock that you can apply to your work here at The J?

I learned how to create a supportive and inspiring community for students of all ages and skill levels. That experience taught me how important it is to foster a welcoming environment where everyone feels included and motivated — something I’m excited to bring to The J as we build connections among members and families.

What’s your guilty pleasure?

Playing bass guitar way too loudly in my living room and pretending I’m on tour — even if my only audience members are my dogs and a very confused neighbor. I call it ‘creative self-care.’

What are you currently reading and/or watching?

Right now, I’m reading Dare to Lead by Brené Brown. It’s full of powerful insights about leading with empathy and courage, which really resonates with me both personally and professionally.

What do people need to make sure is on their calendars?

In addition to the J’La Gala on August 21, we’re hosting a Back-to-School Pool Party Open House on August 3 for members — and a great opportunity for non-members to get a feel for our vibe. And I’m especially excited about I Love The J Day on September 14, a great family day with cool indoor and outdoor activities and food trucks. Stay tuned for details…
