Yom Ha’Atzmaut | Independence Day
Wednesday, April 30, 5-7 pm
Levite Jewish Community Center
The Levite Jewish Community Center and The Birmingham Jewish Federation are excited to co-sponsor a celebration of Israel’s Yom Ha’Atzmaut | Independence Day on Wednesday, April 30, 5-7 p.m. at the LJCC. The event will include kosher Israeli food and music along with activities and crafts. The event is free and open to the public. RSVP by April 15.
The joyful holiday immediately follows Yom HaZikaron, a solemn day of remembrance for fallen soldiers and victims of terror. The connection between these two days highlights the deep gratitude Israelis feel for the soldiers who gave their lives in service of an independent Israel. ‘One Nation, One Heart’
In honor of Israel’s 77th birthday, this year’s theme is עם אחד, לב אחד | One Nation, One Heart. The event is made possible thanks to the generous support of the Myers/Morrison Fund of the Birmingham Jewish Foundation and YAMIM, a collaboration between JCC Association of North America and Israel’s Ministry for Diaspora Affairs and Combating Antisemitism.
For dinner, chef Josh Haynes will serve up a variety of kosher Israeli food. Participants will be able to enjoy their meals while taking in a brief Yom Ha’Atzmaut program that will feature a communal performance of “Chai” sung by students from N.E. Miles Jewish Day School.
Events for children will include:
- Robin Berger leading a program for up to age pre-K in the senior lounge 5-5:30 p.m.
- Israel-themed activities, including games, Hebrew bracelet-making, Israeli flag-themed manicures, and temporary tattoo stations for kids and teens
- A balloon artist
- A station for all ages to craft birthday cards to be sent to Israel

Supporting Israeli artisans
“Many Israeli small businesses have struggled due to the sharp decline in tourism since the events of October 7, 2023,” explains Hadas Levine, director of programs and events at the Federation. “So this year, we’re thrilled to give attendees the opportunity to support Israeli artisans directly through ESEK, a company dedicated to connecting Israeli entrepreneurs with the global community.”
Andrew Keene, a co-founder of ESEK, will be on hand to showcase a variety of handcrafted goods by Israeli artisans. In addition to purchasing goods in support of Israeli artisans, attendees will able to enter a raffle for a gift basket full of beautiful goods.
ESEK reinvests its profits into Israel through grants, loans, and training programs, ensuring long-term support for these entrepreneurs.
“Yom Ha’Atzmaut is more than just a celebration — it’s a time to reflect on Israel’s resilience and come together as a community in joy and solidarity,” Hadas says. “Whether you’re playing games, enjoying delicious Israeli food, or supporting small businesses, there’s something for everyone to connect with the spirit of the day.
“We look forward to celebrating this milestone together and strengthening our shared bond with Israel.”
