Meet The J’s new beginner mahjong instructor: Rachel Mazer, also known as “The Marvelous Mrs. Mazer” (and for you Maisel insiders, Rachel’s game name just happens to be Midge).

Zoe Weil (left) gets some tips from mahjong maestro Rachel Mazer.

Rachel has clients throughout Alabama. But she’s teaching them not only the rules — they’re also learning about the deep Jewish cultural connections to the popular game. She observes that while her students quickly develop a love for the game, they’re often even more intrigued by mahjong’s history — something Rachel is well versed in and excited to share.

When meeting Rachel, it doesn’t take long to feel her contagious passion for the game. And those Jewish roots make mahjong much more than just a hobby. While she uses beautiful top-notch mahjong sets to teach her students, her late grandmother’s set is her most treasured, and highlights her deep personal connection to the game.

Introducing new players to the game brings Rachel true joy.

Classes will begin Tuesday, February 4, 5-7 p.m. and will continue on February 11 and February 18. Registration includes the three classes of two hours each.

The goal of the course is not only to build confident players, but also to foster community by establishing new mahjong circles where participants can regularly play together. To ensure that each player receives adequate instruction, this course will be limited to 12 registrants. And as usual, LJCC members will enjoy a substantial discount — yet another reason why you can’t afford not to become a member!
