The Levite Jewish Community Center joins the Birmingham community in remembering Dr. Robert Levin, a devoted physician, beloved community leader, and cherished member of The J family for 47 years. Robert’s impact touched generations of families through his medical career, his love of Birmingham, and his unmistakable voice as the longtime public address announcer for the University of Alabama’s Million Dollar Band.
In November 2024, Robert joined Margaret Norman for a special installment of the LJCC’s Southern Jewish Voices series. His interview explored his family’s deep roots in Birmingham’s Jewish community, his years in medicine, and his many contributions to the city. So many people came to hear his story that the program was moved from its regular venue to the auditorium. Watch Robert’s Southern Jewish Voices interview here.
Robert’s legacy reflects the very best of what makes a community special: a commitment to caring for others, a deep sense of belonging, and a genuine love of life. As LJCC CEO Brooke Bowles shared, “I feel like I hit the jackpot getting to know Robert over the past five years. He was part of the LJCC family for nearly half a century, and he loved this center for both its history and for its potential. More than anything, he loved life, and you couldn’t help but smile whenever you were in his presence.”
We are grateful for the many years Robert shared with The J and for the joy, wisdom, and warmth he brought to everyone around him. May his memory be a blessing.
