Rolling out the rugelach

This year’s Jewish Food and Culture Fest on April 26 will bring some sweet (and savory) upgrades to a menu that’s always drawn a crowd. Alongside longtime favorites, festivalgoers can look forward to a lineup of traditional baked goods, including homemade hamantaschen, apple cake, rugelach, and mandelbread (see detailed descriptions of these items in our menu).

Perhaps most notably, the rugelach is getting a major upgrade as it is being made from scratch this year, promising a fresher and more authentic taste than the store-bought versions from previous years.

This year’s fresh-baked rugelach feature a cinnamon-pecan-coconut filling.

“We really wanted to lean into the homemade feel this year,” says seasoned baker and staff member Ruth Nomberg. “These recipes carry so much tradition — just like your Bubbie or grandmother makes. We’re excited to share them.”

There’s also a new addition on the savory side: New York-style deli slaw that will offer a crisp, tangy complement to the festival’s heartier fare.

In the lead-up to the festival on April 26, guests won’t have to wait to indulge as a selection of baked goods will be available for purchase in the Levite JCC lobby during the week prior. It will be a perfect preview of what’s shaping up to be one of the tastiest Food Fests yet.
