Thorough pool prep makes summer splash

We can’t think of a better way to welcome our community to another sunny summer at the Levite JCC than opening the outdoor pool. This Tuesday we opened the season for our 300,000-gallon body of water… or what we like to refer to as Birmingham’s best pool.

Members taking a break from the cool sparkling water will enjoy lounging on the freshly cleaned chairs under 300 additional square feet of canopies (courtesy of the Alabama Dermatology Society).

In case of rain on Sunday, we have an indoor plan that involves a gaga pit, fast-paced basketball, cornhole, and of course lots of soft serve.

In addition to the chairs and canopies, grass was cut, bathrooms were painted, and pumps were rebuilt. And of course the pool itself was drained, bleached, and pressure-washed (the basin and deck) before being refilled for the season ahead. We’ve even patched up our famous giant inflatables.

It’s all part of a weeks-long effort to spruce things up for a great season.

Clean and safe

“Our team takes a lot of pride in making sure families have a safe, clean, and welcoming place to spend their summer,” says Facilities Director Doug Hocutt. “There’s a lot of work people never see, but everyone on our team jumped in and worked together to make it happen.”

And when it comes to safety, few things are more important than our lifeguarding crew. Over the course of 10 days, Kelly Ryan, our recently returned pool manager, and Head Lifeguard Nathan Donahue trained and certified 34 lifeguards.

Facilities crew member Yuri Litvinsov praised the teamwork behind the effort. “It’s such a pleasure working with this team,” he says. “Everybody worked hard to get the pool ready, and we’re excited to see families enjoying it all summer long.”
