We’re excited to once again be offering a variety of programs at The J. In April alone we’ve scheduled events for bibliophiles, moviegoers, history buffs, Bob Dylan fans, poetry lovers, and kids.
“I began my swimming career by being told that I would never make it in the sport,” says Ryan Klages. But a handful of medals, honors, and a scholarship later proved that prediction to have been off target.
So how exactly do you prepare for an event where you need hundreds of pounds of food to be prepared by dozens of cooks for service to thousands of guests?
LJCC Trainer Yakov Lyublinskiy appeared on Thursday’s 10 o’clock news to talk about the war in his native Ukraine. He was interviewed at The J by Jeff Eliasoph from local NBC affiliate WVTM Channel 13.
“Right now I’m looking to bring more senior classes, mind/body classes, and evening classes,” says The J’s new group exercise coordinator.

“Physical activity saved my health,” says the popular trainer who came to Birmingham from Ukraine a quarter century ago. “It simply got stuck in my head that physical activity is important for maintaining mental and physical health.”
The final numbers showed 81 individuals playing 67 total matches. “It was great that whole families could participate,” says tournament organizer Joey Unkenholz.
The money will fund a new introduction to Judaism and Jewish culture class — a proposed eight-week course that will include overviews of the different sects along with Jewish foods and celebrations, plus a Birmingham Jewish civil rights tour.
