Veteran coaches take swim club helm

Miriam Sokol has been part of The J’s aquatics program for 26 years while John Besse has been here for some 35 years.

The J is excited to announce that longtime swim coaches and instructors Miriam Sokol and John Besse will lead the Barracudas Year-Round Swim Club in its upcoming season.

“Together, Miriam and John have more than half a century of aquatics experience here at The J,” says Wellness Director Courtney Rogers. “I’m looking forward to seeing the duo apply their knowledge and passion to this program.”

Miriam has been part of The J’s aquatics program for 26 years while John has been here for some 35 years. The two coaches are eager to tap into their experience to revitalize the program.

“Swimming is a lifetime sport,” Miriam says. “We want our swimmers to love swimming as a way to stay active, not just as a child but as an adult as well.”

Open to everyone

The club welcomes all abilities and allows participants to improve and compete regardless of past experience. The program teaches water safety, teamwork, and motivation while enhancing physical and mental health. “While many goals set for swimmers are individual, they rely on their team for support and camaraderie,” Miriam explains.

For his part, John says he’s looking forward to fostering a “wholesome environment” that will provide a solid foundation for learning.

As always, scholarships are available to participants.
