New discounts for seniors at The J

This week the LJCC Board of Directors approved a new 10 percent discount for our members who are at least 65 years old. In addition, The J will waive the normally $150 registration fee for new members in this age group. The discounts will be granted upon request by new and current members (simply email membership@bhamjcc.org).

“While The J has always done a good job of catering to seniors, we just think it’s time to offer this important segment of our membership more value for being part of our community,” says Executive Director Brooke Bowles. “At the same time, we’re ramping up programming for this group.”

Nan Unkenholz, center, is at The J just about every day and especially enjoys her mahjong group.

A quick sampling of current programs shows a wide variety of offerings tailored for seniors to address the mind, body, and soul: tai chi lessons, gatherings of the Roz Feigelson Circle of Life Knitting Circle, mahjong meet-ups, “Honor Our Parents” Shabbat services, Questions With the Rabbi luncheons, and our popular Southern Jewish Voices lunchtime interviews.

Our inaugural Game Day that we co-hosted with Collat Jewish Family Services saw seniors playing tabletop games with students from the N.E. Miles Jewish Day School.

And on the Fitness Floor, classes geared specifically for seniors include the ever-popular Zumba Gold and the low-intensity Aqua Aerobics and J-Move, plus Chair Yoga, Creative Movement, and BodyBalance.

Members also have the opportunity to sign up for personal training that’s tailored to an individual’s needs and abilities.

She’s a regular

One person who can’t get enough of The J is 69-year-old Nan Unkenholz. “My day is not complete unless I teach at least one fitness class,” says the popular instructor. “I like being in a place that is helping to build a caring community and where I can meet my Jewish and non-Jewish friends.” She plays lunchtime mahjong regularly with a group that’s grown to 12.

Nan especially enjoys summers at The J, when she can watch her two granddaughters enjoy all the offerings of J Camp. That’s when you can also find her lounging at Thursday Family Fun Night pool parties.

“I love The J,” she says.
