Sample question and answer:

Question: “We are trying to integrate Shabbat into our family routine. What is the one thing you recommend we do?”

Answer: “It’s hard to pick just one thing. It’s almost like if you go to your doctor and ask, ‘What’s the one thing that will keep me healthy: Eating? Sleeping? Exercising?’ They’re all important!

“I will say you can, for example, start by lighting Shabbat candles — bringing the light of Shabbat into your house and transforming that moment into a moment of Shabbat.

“But the important thing is simply to start.

“Your question reminds me of a true story of a rabbi visiting Alaska in search of Jews, and the incredible way a young girl discovers how her lighting Shabbat candles is so special.

“All around the world, women and girls bring in Shabbat by lighting candles on Friday afternoon, 18 minutes before sunset. But when they are lighting 18 minutes before sunset, bringing in Shabbat in China, it is not yet Shabbat in Israel until eight hours later, when the women there light the candles.

“And then seven hours later, New York lights and brings in Shabbat, and eventually California, and the entire world lights, and brings in Shabbat at different times.

“The rabbi turns to the little girl and says, ‘Here in Alaska, you are the last Shabbos candles in the world.’”
